The newest statistics from the OECD (through December 2005) have the US holding steady in 12th place. Of course, this is just among the 30 OECD members covered by the survey. It should also be noted that the US was 4th in 2001, 10th in 2003, and now 12th in 2005. The "good news" is that we were 12th in 2004 -- which means that the US is only stagnant this year, not continuing our rapid descent down the list (at least for this year).
While some may point to countries like Japan and South Korea -- blaming population density as the root cause for this phenomenon, this fails to explain why countries like Sweden and Canada are well ahead of the US.
